MICRO INDUSTRIES RECEIVES CERTIFICATION TO ISO 14001

PCB Manufacturing and Design Services Company Meets the Voluntary Environmental Management Standard

Westerville, Ohio, August 31, 1998

Micro Industries Corporation today announced its compliance with the ISO 14001 standard, one of the world's first environmental management system standards. The Quality Management Institute (QMI) registered Micro Industries, a full service provider of electronic engineering and manufacturing resources to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). The company designs and produces standard, custom, and semi-custom printed circuit boards (PCBs) for embedded and integrated computer systems.

QMI offers companies independent assessments of their environmental management systems (EMS). A voluntary standard, ISO 14001 details how an environmental management system should be structured for a manufacturing facility. The ISO 14001 standards do not set performance targets or award a score at the end of the process. Instead, they ensure that organizations that adopt the standard are aware of the impact of their operations on the environment, and provide a foundation from which to make continuous improvements. The standard also gives customers an easy way to evaluate their suppliers' environmental practices. Initial responses from the business community show that the new standard will likely become as popular as the ISO 9001 quality standard. So far less than 106 companies in the U.S. have complied with the standard.

Corporate Environmental Initiatives

"In 1989, we began eliminating toxic materials from our manufacturing processes," said Michael Curran, CEO of Micro Industries. "We developed new manufacturing processes to comply with the EPA requirements of a zero-discharge manufacturing facility. Our facility employs process technology that generates no toxic by-products. All process fumes and liquids are handled by completely closed-loop filtration systems. All solid waste by-products are monitored for toxic materials, with more than 99 percent of all solid waste materials completely recycled. Four years ago, we extended our recycling program to the entire facility, reducing solid-waste materials to fewer than 500 cubic yards per year. Now, we are pleased to be an industry pioneer in our compliance with ISO 14001, an important new global standard."
