MICRO INDUSTRIES ANNOUNCES NEW HIGHLY INTEGRATED SINGLE BOARD COMPUTER FOR POINT-OF-SALE AND KIOSK SYSTEMS
Cost Effective Board Addresses the Most Demanding Industrial Applications With Low Power Consumption and Broad Temperature Range
Westerville, Ohio, November 18, 1999
Micro Industries Corporation today introduced the new POS51, the latest offering from its POS (point-of-sale) product line. The POS51 is a single board computer specifically designed for industrial control and other applications that require a broad temperature range and significant processing capabilities, and that have limited space requirements. Micro Industries is an electronics manufacturing services (EMS) company that provides electronic engineering and manufacturing resources to OEMs.
"Industrial and consumer interactive display and transaction processing systems are among the fastest growing segments of the electronic systems market," stated Michael Curran, president and CEO of Micro Industries. "Because of the shortage of qualified personnel in both markets, companies are looking for alternatives to maintaining highly trained staff to handle simple transaction processing operations. Fully automated kiosk or point-of-sale transaction systems provide an efficient, cost effective method to support these transaction requirements."
Curran continued, "The POS51 addresses the growing demand for industrial interactive display and transaction processing systems. It is unique not only because of its extended temperature capabilities, but also because of its small size and high level of integration. Historically, systems addressing this market use up to five or six separate boards. The POS51 was developed using technology which incorporates the features of all these boards into one single board computer."
The POS51 utilizes IntelĀ® Pentium processor technology, the Intel TX chipset, and a variety of peripheral controllers to provide virtually all of the control functions required for demanding point-of-sale and kiosk computer systems, including those for industrial automation and control and retail applications. With a high level of integration in an extremely small form factor, the POS51 provides standard PC functions as well as a touch-screen interface, LCD flat panel controller, expanded serial and parallel I/O, Ethernet, and I/O expansion via a riser card.
With its low power consumption, the POS51 is designed to operate over a broad temperature range without the need for a fan on the processor. This feature makes the board ideal for OEMs whose product requirements, based on a particular environment or enclosure, necessitate using a board that runs reliably over an extended temperature range.
Optimized Features of New POS51 Offer Significant Value to OEMs
- Intel Pentium Processor and Intel 82439 TX Chipset: With low power output and 32MB on-board memory, these technologies from Intel offer significant value. Memory and speed are optimized using 2 SIMM sockets for up to 512MB of extended data output (EDO) DRAM and 512KB of Pipelined Burst Cache.
- ELO TouchSystems Touch Screen Interface: An integrated interface to these industry-leading, rugged touch screens insures high quality and ease-of-use.
- Intel 69000 Graphics Controller: This highly integrated graphics controller for embedded and industrial PC applications is integrated with 2MB video display memory and LCD flat panel interface support. 4MB of video display memory is optional. The controller is the first member of the HiQVideo family to integrate high speed SDRAM frame buffer memory into the chip, delivering uncompromised performance while consuming significantly less power than the discrete solution.
- Texas Instruments 1394 (FireWire) Controller: This extremely fast bus standard supports data transfer rates of up to 100, 200, or 400MB per second. With its speed and support of isynchronous data, it is ideal for devices that need to transfer high levels of data in real time.
- Intel 82559 Ethernet Controller: Intel's highly integrated 32-bit PCI LAN controller for 10 or 100MB per second fast Ethernet networks is the company's leading solution for PCI LAN designs. It combines a small package design with low power expenditure to conserve energy.
- Four Serial I/O Ports: The POS51 supports three general purpose RS-232 ports and one port dedicated to the ELO touch screen.
- Two Bi-directional Parallel Ports: One ECP/EPP/IEEE 1284 and one ECP/EPP enable fast peripheral communications.
- ISA/PCI Bus Expansion: The POS51 includes a riser card connector for ISA/PCI bus expansion with secondary EIDE and floppy connections.
Availability and Price
The POS51 is available immediately in the United States and Europe. Pricing begins at $595 (U.S.) in OEM quantities. Variations in pricing are based on configured options.
